Flat design is a controversial topic these days. On one hand – it revolutionised web design. Because of flat design trend colour schemes, layouts, iconography and many more design features have changed. Many designers love it, and I can see why. Flat design websites have many perks – they are easy to read and simple in use, they are lively and bright, they usually have awesome typography, they are clean-looking and they are really, I mean really really TRENDY.

On the other hand – flat design is trendy. And people tend to overuse trendy things. There are many people who love flat design, there are as many of those who hate it.
If you still don’t know what flat design is (I can’t believe that, but just in case), lets have a closer look.

Per Wikipedia: “Flat design refers to a style of interface design which removes any stylistic choices that give the illusion of three-dimensions (such as drop shadows, gradients, or textures) and is focused on a minimalist use of simple elements, typography and flat colors.”

So, flat design is just that – flat. That does not mean it has no effects at all though. The effects just aren’t used to create dimension and depth. With the focus on solid colours, typography and easy to use UI elements flat design is preferred by those who want their website visitors to pay more attention to content. Flat design makes it easier to create responsive websites, that are sensitive to changes in browser sizes on different devices. Besides, with the minimal use of design elements the websites weigh less and thus load faster, resize easier and look good on both small and hi-definition screens.

Such huge brands as Google, Microsoft and Apple have succumbed to the trend and use flat design. This does not mean that flat design is the only way to go if you want a beautiful and successful website. For example Reddid did not adopt to the trend and is still hugely successful.

You shouldn’t do something just because big brands do it. The design of your website should complement the content.

If you do go with the hottest trend in style you should pay attention to details and do it good. One detail you should not miss if you are going with flat design is icons. As with the overall flat design flat icons should have solid colours, the shadows may be used but the image is to stay flat, remember – no depth and dimension here. Retro style goes really well with flat design.

If you plan on building a sports website with flat design, we have just the thing for you. As mentioned above this set of FREE sports flat icons is provided by vecteezy.com. Thank you again Shawn, they are really awesome!
